Watch out for the Basket Bandits before Black Friday
There are a mere seven days to go until Black Friday is upon us; at Salmon, a Wunderman Commerce Company, we’re predicting an estimated spend of over £5bn online by savvy shoppers over what we have coined ‘Black Fiveday’ i.e. Thursday 24th – Monday 28th November.
One of the new Black Fiveday trends is the emergence of a new breed of shopper called the “Basket Bandit”. These are shoppers who, aware that there could be deals during this peak discount period but also aware of time limitations, identify items in advance, put them into their online shopping baskets and hover over their buy buttons in the event that these items get discounted over the course of Black Fiveday.
Whether this is good or bad for the retailer is debatable but it does put the online shopper in control.
Online retailers need to ensure that their shopping carts don’t automatically re-fresh and empty after a number of days of inactivity as this could wipe out the bandit’s hoard!
Black Friday or Fiveday is well and truly entrenched in the online shopper’s psyche and we will be seeing more and more of them using canny techniques over the coming week to get that deal!
